International Education Week Celebrated Nov. 12-14 at UC Clermont College

UC Clermont College will celebrate International Education Week (IEW) Nov. 12-14. Please consider attending the special events scheduled for this year’s celebration listed below. Students who attend two or more sessions are eligible for a chance to win a Kindle Fire! Faculty and staff are also encouraged to participate in the festivities.

Tuesday – Nov. 12
 
Africa: a photographic journey 9:30-10:20 a.m., Snyder, S142 Guest artist Linda Smith will share her photographic journey, via Skype chat, of living and working in Africa to start a self-sustaining art center in Kigali, Rwanda.

Travel Writing: A Crash Course 11-11:50 a.m., Snyder, S142 Do you know the best way to record your travel experiences? Join Joshua Franklin as he shares best tips on capturing your travel memories, through writing, to enjoy for years to come.

International Food Sampling noon, Peters-Jones, Student Lounge Sample ethnic cuisines from different parts of the world and gather info from UC study abroad tables!

Girl Rising 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Peters-Jones, Café Area (Stop by anytime for the continuous looping of the film.) This groundbreaking feature film demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to transform societies. The film presents the remarkable stories of nine girls around the world, told by celebrated writers and voiced by renowned actors such as Salma Hayek, Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys and more. Catch it again on Wednesday and Thursday and don’t miss the discussion, Girl Rising, Join the Movement on Thursday!

International Poetry Reading 10:10-11:05 a.m., Snyder, S142 A reading of poetry in a variety of languages from many different cultures by UC Clermont College students. Led by assistant professor Phoebe Reeves and associate professor Isabel Parra.

Around the World in 50 Minutes 11-11:50 a.m., Krueger Auditorium Keynote speaker, Marty Essen delivers a high-energy, seven continents, digital slide show full of laughs, surprises and interesting facts.

Linda Smith– Artist Reception noon-1 p.m., Art Gallery Enjoy refreshments while viewing the guest artist’s photographs of Africa and its people .

Living in the Czech Republic 12:30-1:20 p.m., Snyder, S143 First-year student, Christian Carwell, highlights her experiences as a high school student living abroad in the Czech Republic. Learn about the Czech people, food, schools, culture and sample a traditional Czech dessert.

Cool Writing Careers 1:30-2:30 p.m., Snyder, S142 Marty Essen, author of “Cool Creatures, Hot Planet,” discusses writing careers and provides tips about writing, publishing and promoting your own book.

Innovative Digital Literacy in India: A case study
10-10:50 a.m., Snyder, S142 Learn how partnerships between corporations and non-profit organizations in India have empowered disadvantaged groups to gain critical digital literacy skills. Presented by associate professor Suguna Chundur.

Sri Lanka: A Three Week Study Abroad Opportunity 11-11:50 a.m., Snyder, S142 Amy Abafo will share info about the English 2089 class offered in spring 2014 which gives UC Clermont students an opportunity at the end of the semester to go to Sri Lanka.

Munich Summer Curriculum 12:30-1:20 p.m., Snyder, S142 Professor Andy Curran will present a photo show and share his experiences teaching this UC study abroad opportunity in Germany. Find out how you can participate.

Girl Rising — Join the Movement 1:30-2 p.m., Snyder, S143 Join Kim Ellison as she highlights awareness of educating women around the world and holds an open discussion about the film.

UC Clermont will hold a grand prize drawing during the IEW celebration. To be eligible to win the grand prize, a Kindle Fire (valued at $200), pick up a “UC Passport” at any red star event on this schedule. Stamps for the passport also can be collected at any red star event. You must collect two stamps and turn in your “UC Passport” on or before 5 p.m. Nov. 22 to be entered to win. One winner also will be selected at each of the 10 red star events to win a smaller prize for attending. (Prizes are available for UC Clermont students only)
