This week, the Office of the Provost launched the Department Head Leadership Program for leaders from across the University of Cincinnati. The monthly sessions will focus on topics essential for managers, including hiring, budgeting and creating a healthy work culture.
“We want to bring our department and unit administrators together so that they can build a strong community of support and get the resources and information they need,” said Provost Beverly Davenport.
Helping faculty chart successful administrative careers is another goal of the sessions. Many department and unit heads arrive in their positions after years spent in classrooms, with little to no formal management training. These 90-minute monthly sessions, which will run through June 2015, cover the essentials in a format geared specifically for the University audience.
The program, organized by Interim Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Rich Miller, was born out of the provost office’s mission to provide ongoing professional development support for faculty as well as offer ongoing educational opportunities for frontline administrators.
Increasing opportunities for leadership development for faculty is a concrete example of what UC’s Third Century
initiative looks like in action, Davenport said.
Upcoming sessions will cover topics including:
