Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party Sunday at UC Clermont College

A Lunar Eclipse of the Moon Party will be held at UC Clermont College at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27. The viewing party will be held in the parking lot of Student Activities Center on campus at 4200 Clermont College Dr., Batavia.

“This particular eclipse is special because this Harvest Moon is a ‘super moon’ meaning it is closer to the earth at this time and therefore 11 percent bigger than usual.  It has been called the ‘Blood Moon’ because of the reddish hue due to its illumination of light filtered as it passes through the earth’s atmosphere,” said David Fankhauser, a professor of biology and chemistry who is co-hosting the viewing party with Associate Professor of Physics Nick Abel.

The penumbral (beginning) phase begins at 8:11 p.m. – this is when a smudge begins to appear at the edge of the moon.  The obvious shadow of the earth will appear at 9:07 p.m. and totality at 10:47 p.m.

Several UC Clermont College faculty will speak about aspects of the eclipse, the moon and its role in human history and science, including:

  • Nick Abel, associate professor of physics, will have several telescopes set up to view the moon and will speak about astronomy.
  • Mandy Hunt, associate professor of geology, will discuss the history of the origin of the moon and its geology.
  • Jill Fankhauser, adjunct associate professor of fine arts, will discuss our historical understanding of the solar system and the role that the moon has played in human history.

Please bring a lawn chair, blanket and a telescope for easy viewing.
