UC to Honor Veterans at Nov. 10 Ceremony

Area veterans and distinguished guests will join the University of Cincinnati community in paying tribute to the country’s military veterans at a special ceremony Thursday, Nov. 10.

The formal Veterans Day Ceremony, led by UC Interim President Beverly Davenport, begins at 10 a.m. on McMicken Commons.

The tribute includes a musical performance by the UC Bearcat Band, presentation of colors by the ROTC Color Guard and remarks by veterans U.S. Army Capt. Shirley May and Ohio Rep. Rick Perales.

May began her military service in 1983 and went on to serve in such roles as military police officer, criminal investigator and special agent in charge for the U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Command. She served as a member of a protective services detail during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and later joined the Cincinnati VA Medical Center as a registered nurse.

May currently works as the center’s women veterans program manager, where she advocates for services for female veterans, among other duties.  She also continues to serve as the company commander for Bravo Company 801st Combat Support Hospital, based in Indianapolis, and as the first vice commander of the Greater Cincinnati Women’s American Legion Post 644.

Perales is serving his second term in the Ohio House, where he represents the 73rd district, an area spanning the western portion of Greene County, including Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The Ohio legislator retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1997, where he last served as commander of the 788th Civil Engineer Squadron at Wright-Patterson. He is the recipient of numerous military awards and honors, including three meritorious service medals and induction in the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

Veterans in attendance will be presented with a commemorative gift following the ceremony.

UC's ceremony will be held in advance of the national Veterans Day observance on Friday, Nov. 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The event is free and open to the community (
