University of Cincinnati Celebrates Commencement on Dec. 13

The University of Cincinnati will hold Commencement exercises for summer and fall graduates at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. The processional of graduates begins at 9:30 a.m. Doors to Fifth Third Arena will open at 8:30 a.m.

The Commencement address will be delivered by UC alumna and Olympic gold medalist Mary Wineberg, whose remarks will recount her personal triumphs as she encourages students to craft their own future victories. Wineberg is one of two participants at Commencement who will be honored with the UC Award for Excellence, which recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to the purposes and ideals of the university.

Attendance at UC’s fourth December Commencement Ceremony, including graduates and guests, is expected to number around 4,000. Over the summer and fall, UC’s Office of Institutional Research reports that 2,452 students applied for graduation as they completed their requirements toward 2,476 degrees (some students earn more than one degree), including:

  • 306 associate degrees
  • 1,073 baccalaureate degrees
  • 937 master’s degrees
  • 160 doctoral or professional (law: 4 and medicine: 1) degrees

At December Commencement, the university will present honorary doctorates to

Lois and Richard Rosenthal, longtime Cincinnati philanthropists who will each receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

Dale Warland, distinguished conductor and composer, who will receive an Honorary Doctor of Performing Arts

Cheryll A. Dunn, a former UC administrator and UC alumna who’s a nationally recognized advocate for outreach and opportunity in education, will be honored with the UC Award for Excellence.

Four educators from around the Tristate will receive UC’s Cincinnati USA Outstanding Educator Award. Each of the recipients will be presented with a $1,000 UC scholarship to be awarded to a high-school senior who plans to attend UC in the 2009-2010 academic year. The educators were nominated by soon-to-graduate UC students who wanted to recognize a K-12 educator who had a lasting impact on their pursuit of a college degree.
