Bed Adjustments
Welcome to your campus home, where your space is yours to set up. When you arrive, your room will be thoroughly cleaned and ready for move-in, but the furniture, including beds, may be arranged differently than others in your community. Instead of resetting every room to a standard layout, we’re giving you the flexibility to choose the bed adjustment setup that works best for you and your roommate(s). With a little planning, you can create a space that fits your needs from day one.
Depending on assignment location, students may have a few options for requesting changes to their room's bed set-up. Generally, there are two options for adjustments:
Bunking or unbunking
Changes to bed height (sometimes referred to as "lofting")
For more information about what is available in your assigned community, please see below.
For fall semester 2026, the Bed Set-up Request Form will be available in the housing portal beginning July 20 and will close at 12 p.m. (noon), July 24.
The form will reopen after fall move-in for any students who would like to request an adjustment but miss the July window.
Bed Adjustments Overview
We’re committed to giving you flexibility in how your room is arranged while ensuring a safe and efficient process for bed adjustments. Requests for changes to bed setup are typically available for a limited window during the summer after housing assignments are released, as well as for a short time after move-in. These adjustments are provided at no cost, while supplies last, in communities where the service is offered. In some cases, requests can only be completed once rooms are prepared according to provided guidelines.
For safety reasons, residents are not permitted to adjust their own beds. This includes changing bed height, lofting, unlofting, bunking, or unbunking. Attempting to do so may result in injury and could lead to charges for any damage to university property.
Bed adjustment requests are not completed in the order they are received. Instead, our teams work in coordinated batches based on building location and logistics to serve as many residents as efficiently as possible. While every effort is made to complete all requests promptly, those submitted after move-in may take up to six weeks. Some configurations require additional components from university inventory and are fulfilled based on available supplies. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we support your move-in experience.
How to Request
If your community offers an adjustment service, submit your request at the Bed Set-Up step of the Application in the Housing Portal, or find it under the Forms menu.
Please note, there may be some cases where you are unable to submit a request for which you believe you are eligible.
- If you believe you are eligible to submit a request based on the information below, please contact your Neighborhood Operations Coordinator (NOC) through your community’s Service Center.
- If your request is related to an accommodation, please begin your conversation with Accessibility Resources (AR) and follow their instructions.
We will communicate with you about your request via your UC email or notes left at your room. Please note that for post-arrival adjustments, it is your responsibility to clear the bed and surrounding area of your belongings. Our teams may be unable to make adjustments to beds in rooms that do not have the area cleared.
Please remember, it is your responsibility to obtain agreement with your roommate(s) for changes that may impact them. If you submit a pre-arrival adjustment request, you should encourage your roommate to submit one as well.
Bed Heights
The following are the available options for height adjustments:
- Low Height: Bottom of the frame is approximately 12” from the floor. Comparable to a typical bed at home.
- Medium Height: Bottom of the frame is approximately 36” from the floor. Provides room for additional under-bed storage, including some university-provided dressers in some rooms in some communities.
- High Height: Bottom of the frame is approximately 64” from the floor. Provides room for other furniture beneath the bed, such as dressers and desks. A powerful solution when unbunking. No side rails or ladders are provided. A stabilizer bar is added.
- Bunked Beds: Two beds stacked. Approximately the same as a High Height over a Low Height. Most efficient use of floor space. No side rails or ladders are provided.
Arrangement Options
Please note: Not all communities will have options to request bed adjustments. Availability of the following arrangements is subject to the residence hall; students may not request a bed adjustment in the following residence halls: Bellevue Gardens, Gateway Lofts, Stratford Heights, The Verge, University Park Apartments (UPA), U Square, or 101 Corry.
