Graduate Assistant Positions

The Learning Commons provides centralized academic support for University of Cincinnati students.  We bring together faculty, best-practices in teaching and learning, and hundreds of outstanding peer educators to create flexible academic success programming. We’re seeking motivated candidates who enjoy working in a fast-moving environment to help students achieve their full potential!

This position will support the development and management of First Year Experience Learning Communities. This may include assisting in undergraduate and graduate staff hiring and training, student staff observations, curriculum development, data collection and analysis, and leading the Learning Communities program’s unique student attendance process. The Graduate Assistant may also assist in evaluating and creating new programmatic goals and procedures.

Past experience working in first-year experience, the Learning Commons, or other student support services is not required but is preferred.    

Hours: This is a 10-hour per week appointment.

Duration: The position will run from June 22nd, 2026, to June 18th, 2027, with the option to continue into the subsequent academic year. There may also be an option to begin earlier in the summer if available. 

Pay: The position is a $9,000 stipend position with pay that averages to $19.56 per hour. Graduate Assistants are not required to work during university breaks. If needed, Graduate Assistants will be paid separately for time worked during these weeks.

This position supports critical oversight of administrative, training, and assessment functions for a large student staff of 40-50 Peer Tutors, including direct supervision of 5-8 Peer Tutors. Responsibilities include a mix of student staff recruitment and development and organizational and office management responsibilities.

Responsibilities:  

•Training
Develop training materials, including agendas for monthly tutor professional development meetings and guidelines for tutor observation/performance reviews, and support undergraduate student leaders (Peer Tutor Coordinators) in facilitating these sessions. Assist with the training of tutors and identify areas of additional training.  

•Supervision
Serve as first point of contact and conduct performance/observation evaluation meetings for 5-8 tutors. Serve as first point of contact for all 50 Peer Tutors regarding specific administrative and onboarding tasks. Handle disciplinary issues and employee professional development.   

•Assessment
Evaluate effectiveness of peer tutoring and employee training. Identify additional areas of assessment. Potential for research projects around peer tutoring efficacy, student retention, and student usage.    

•Administration
Manage weekly communication/updates to Peer Tutors through creating newsletter. Assist with loading tutor subjects and schedules into tutor scheduling system at beginning of semester. Respond to emails from tutors and supervisor promptly. Potential to assist with other administrative tasks including timekeeping, returning peer tutor training, student-athlete tutor training, and other tasks typically completed by undergraduate student leadership. 

•General Office Support
GAs can schedule hours during all Learning Commons open times (Monday-Thursday 8:30am-8:00pm, Friday 8:30am-4:00pm). The GA will be encouraged, but not required, to be available to assist with opening (8-9am) or closing (5-8pm) the Learning Commons once per week.

Requirements and/or preferences for applicant qualifications 
Please note that all candidates for GA positions must be in good standing with their degree programs (e.g., 3.0 GPA + making adequate progress to degree) and meet the GA eligibility criteria published by the Graduate School.  

•Required: Ability to work independently with minimal oversight. Ability to work in-person on either Clifton or Clermont campuses. 
•Required: Tutoring experience 
•Preferred: Understanding of academic support programs, interest and awareness of issues in higher education, including retention and degree completion, student development theory, and campus engagement. 
•Preferred: Experience with the systems and tools such as TracCloud and LMS

This position will support the development and management of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program. The SI program employs SI Leaders who facilitate weekly review sessions using active learning strategies to create a collaborative learning environment for students in “historically difficult courses” — courses in subjects with a high rate of D or F grades and withdrawals. Students voluntarily participate in SI sessions to improve their understanding of the course material and improve their grades.

The Graduate Assistant (GA) will aid the Academic Services Administrator for SI (Katelyn Lusher, lusherkj@ucmail.uc.edu) with the development, management, and long-term planning of the SI program.

Training and Education: This position will undergo training in campus systems, policies, and procedures required to understand the Learning Commons. This will take place largely during the first several weeks of the position and include the following topics:

· Campus and Classroom Scheduling policies (25Live)

· Internal data management tools and reports (TracCloud and point system)

· Current scheduling practices (TallyCal, Microsoft Forms, MS Excel, Microsoft Power Automate)

· Learning Commons student staff training (Canvas, MS PowerPoint)

· Other required University trainings as assigned

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

· Coordination: Oversee scheduling and completion of staff observations, including creating and implementing assessment rubrics, and training staff on applying rubrics and providing feedback.

· Training: Assist with training of Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) and Coordinators, identify areas where additional/modified training is beneficial, and develop training materials.

· Supervision: Assist with supervision of SILs and Coordinators, including overseeing new staff onboarding tasks, assisting with employee professional development, performing observations, tracking coordinator responsibilities, and leading coaching conversations.

· Hiring: Assist with recruiting and hiring efforts, including interviews.

· Community building: Assist with projects designed to foster community in the SI program, such as student recognition, workshops, and events.

· Administrative support: Assist with administrative tasks, including staff task tracking, timekeeping, weekly communications, Canvas updates, organization of SI session content library, program improvement projects and initiatives, and other tasks as necessary.

· General office support: GAs can schedule in-person hours during all Learning Commons open times (Monday-Thursday 8:00am-8:00pm, Friday 8:00am-5:00pm). GAs may be asked to assist with additional office responsibilities such as opening, closing, and on-call shifts, focus group facilitation, and Learning Commons presentations as necessary.

· Collaborate with and provide supervisor with work updates in regular meetings.

· Other duties as assigned or based on identified interests of successful candidate.

Responsibilities of this position would fill approximately 10 hours/week, subject to variations during busy periods of the semesters and semester/holiday breaks.
