Carson Hartlage
Carson Hartlage is a fourth year student in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) and second year student in the Biomedical Informatics graduate program at the UC College of Medicine. He received a Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame in 2020.
Carson's research interests lie at the intersection of clinical informatics and population health, with a focus on clinical and public health strategies to improve child health outcomes. In his dissertation work, he applies (1) computational methods to integrate healthcare system data with place-based social and environmental information; and (2) qualitative and co-design approaches to facilitate the use of these insights in clinical care, healthcare management, and policymaking. His clinical interests are in pediatrics.
Carson is also committed to community service and policy advocacy. He has served for more than two years on the Board of Directors of a statewide organization supporting a historically marginalized community. He has also engaged in advocacy at the institutional, local, state, and national levels with a focus on LGBTQ+ health, reproductive justice, and access to affordable healthcare.
Carson's proposed Fulbright project explores fairness in machine learning applications used in liver organ transplant allocation in the U.S. and Germany. This work aims to advance equitable and responsible use of technology in healthcare within a high-stakes clinical domain and an international context.
