Laurel Prince is a fourth-year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in German Studies with a minor in English and certificates in Japanese Language & Culture and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Her own experiences as a lifelong language-learner led her to a passion for language and cultural education, and she plans to take that into a career as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher.

Laurel loves studying languages; she began German classes in Kindergarten and continued throughout high school and college, took Latin and French in high school, and has taken Japanese since starting college. She spent a semester abroad at Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan in the Center for Japanese Studies’ Intensive Japanese Program, where she studied Japanese language and culture and connected with people from around the world. Back in Cincinnati, she has volunteered with ELS (English Language Services) Cincinnati, working with adult English Learners of various backgrounds. She has been working at the UC Learning Commons as a Peer Tutor for German and Japanese courses since her second year.

In her free time, Laurel enjoys crocheting, reading, and practicing the Japanese calligraphy skills she learned while abroad. She also loves hanging out with her dog, Annie, and her cats, Genji and Romeo. After hopefully spending a year as an ETA in Germany, Laurel plans to pursue a master’s degree to further her understanding of language and build her skills as an educator.
