Whatever Floats Your Boat: 12 Regional Colleges Sink or Skim in Concrete Canoe Competition at UC

UC’s Student Chapter of ASCE is hosting the 2005 Ohio Valley Regional Conference (OVRC) from March 31 through April 2. Approximately 250 students will attend from regional schools in Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

Students will spend the three-day conference competing in several events with the hope of advancing to the ASCE National Competitions. This year’s competitions are the Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, Concrete Frisbee, Environmental Waste Water, Technical Paper and Surveying. The Concrete Canoe, Concrete Frisbee and Surveying competitions will be Friday, April 1, at A. J. Jolly Park & Golf Course, in Alexandria, Ky. The Steel Bridge, Technical Paper and Waste Water competitions will be Saturday, April 2, on the UC campus.

Each of these events allows students to apply what they have learned in class in a more entertaining way than in the standard classroom or laboratory setting. In addition to the events, students will be able to network and socialize with each other, as well as faculty and engineering professionals from sponsors such as Baker Concrete Construction, Messer Construction and CHC Fabricating.
