Spectrum News: UC medical students celebrate Match Day
Mason Yoder shares his journey during an exhilarating day
For the first time since 2019, Match Day at the UC College of Medicine was held in person at Kresge Auditorium on Friday, March 18. 174 medical students gathered to find out where they would be doing their residencies over the next three to seven years. One of those, Mason Yoder, was followed by Spectrum News as they documented his experience.
Yoder told Spectrum News he imagined a future in medicine in high school when he started developing a passion for science. Then, in his sophomore year, his grandfather was diagnosed with brain cancer.
“We were very close,” he said. “His influence on my life, and my knowledge and my newfound love for science, that kind of stirred me on for medicine and that’s a journey I’ve been on ever since.”

Yoder pursued a career in medicine at Hope College in Michigan, where he studied chemistry and also met his fiancée Jenni. His four years there ended with disappointment when he didn’t get into medical school.
“It was incredibly disheartening to me,” he said. “But I didn’t give up.”
Yoder took on a job as a nursing assistant to get more experience in health care and reapplied to medical school the following year. He said his acceptance at UC proved he was back on track as long as he kept working.
“I did not think I would get into Cincinnati when I applied to Cincinnati,” he said. “I didn’t know if I would make it through the four years of medical school but I’ve made it through.”
When Yoder opened his envelope, he found out he matched in internal medicine at his top choice of the University of Michigan, where he has family in the area.
