Hoxworth launches “10 Days of Platelets” promotion to offset critical need

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, kicks off its “10 Days of Platelets” promotion to offset the critical need for platelet donors. All individuals who donate platelets between July 26 and August 4 will receive a $25 e-Gift card that can be used at more than 100 retail outlets.

Because platelets are fragile, short-lived blood cells that are essential for normal blood clotting and must be transfused within five days of donation, it's necessary to have a steady, daily stream of platelet donors so our hospital partners have ample supply to help patients in our community. It’s important to note that more than half of the platelets collected by Hoxworth Blood Center are transfused at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

“Platelets are an incredibly important component of blood — they are essential for blood clotting, and critical for patients undergoing organ transplants and treatment for cancer,” said José Cancelas, MD, director of Hoxworth Blood Center.

“We need the Cincinnati community to make platelet donation a priority so we can keep our shelves stocked for patients during these difficult summer months,” Cancelas said.
