University of Cincinnati Research Enterprise Tops $300 Million

The University of Cincinnati announced today that its research enterprise topped $300 million for fiscal year 2003, up 18.6 percent from last year. In fiscal year 2002, UC’s research dollars totaled more than $260 million.

"The resources provided by this increase enable UC to conduct research at the frontiers of knowledge, to train graduate students and postdoctoral associates as future researchers, and to contribute to society in direct and indirect ways," said Howard Jackson, PhD, vice president for research and university dean for advanced studies.

In addition to the funding increase, UC’s Intellectual Property Office reported 86 invention disclosures, 25 U.S. patents filed and nine U.S. patents issued during fiscal year 2003.

Many colleges and departments saw large increases in funding over the last year.

"In particular, the UC Medical Center has recorded a remarkable 27.6 percent increase in funding over last year," said Jackson. "This increase reflects both very large awards, for instance, $9 million to the Genome Research Institute (one of the first awards from the Biomedical Research and Technology Transfer Commission’s Partnership Award Program from the State of Ohio), as well as a larger number of National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards to our many principal investigators. This increase is noteworthy and indeed reflects an extraordinarily talented faculty competing successfully at the national level for funding."
