UC Begins A New Tradition At Its New Autumn Commencement

University of Cincinnati graduate candidates from the Tristate are recalling fond memories of all their years in school as they look ahead to UC’s new Autumn Commencement Ceremony. UC is inviting those future graduates to nominate an outstanding teacher that led them on the pathway to college.

Up to four Tristate teachers ranging from preschool to 12th grade will be recognized at UC’s new Autumn Commencement Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. The honorees will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to present to a student of their choosing who is entering UC in fall 2006.

President Nancy L. Zimpher sent an e-mail to UC’s associate and baccalaureate degree candidates from the Tristate, inviting them to nominate an outstanding teacher from their earlier school days. Nominations will be open through Oct. 28.

“This award process is one small way that the University of Cincinnati can offer well-deserved thanks and recognition to some of Cincinnati USA’s great teachers," said UC President Nancy L. Zimpher. "The research is unequivocal; great teachers are key to student learning. And they help prepare just the kinds of students we want to continue to recruit to UC.”

A UC committee comprised of students, faculty and staff will select the four Tristate educators to be honored. At a presentation during the Commencement Ceremony, they will receive a special citation and the $1,000 scholarship to present to a student who is entering UC as a freshman in fall 2006.

UC’s new Autumn Commencement ceremony is a celebration that exemplifies the UC|21 strategic plan to place students at the center of the university. Each of the marching graduates – master’s, baccalaureate and associate degree candidates – will have their names announced at the ceremony and will be personally congratulated by President Zimpher and their college deans. The ceremony recognizes graduates who finished their degree last summer or this fall. The hooding ceremony for doctoral candidates will be held on June 9, 2006.
