UC Expands Distance-Learning Opportunities For Educators and Business Professionals

UC continues to follow state and national trends in transforming education by growing distance-learning options for students. Two colleges added new distance learning options this fall, the Carl. H. Lindner College of Business (LCOB) and UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH). CECH offers the most distance-learning programs, courses or certificates university wide.

The

Lindner College of Business

added a new online

master’s in taxation degree

, in addition to certificates in corporate and individual taxation. The programs open professional opportunities in law, government and accounting.

UC’s

College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Humans Services

this fall launched three new offerings:

Master’s degree in school psychology

– Enhances educators’ skills in building supportive learning environments for all children.

Master’s degree in literacy and second language studies

– Allows PreK-16 educators to broaden their understanding of the social, cultural and language factors that contribute to a person’s ability to read and write in a first or second language.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESL) graduate certificate

– Addresses a growing demand for educators as the student population continues to grow in its linguistic diversity.

Over the past few years, the UC College of Nursing has also shown significant growth in distance-learning students and in growing distance-learning program offerings, from two programs and 190 students in 2007 to eight programs and 1,274 students in 2011. The college is second behind CECH in distance-learning offerings (programs, certificates, courses) and number of distance-learning students.

The

2011 Sloan Survey of Online Learning

finds that nationally, nearly one-third of all college students – more than 6 million – have taken at least one online course. The survey of more than 2,500 academic leaders revealed a 10 percent growth rate for online enrollments versus a 2 percent growth in the overall student population in higher education. The report also found that 65 percent of higher education institutions believe that online learning is a critical part of their long-term strategy.

UC’s first distance learning program dates back to 1984, with correspondence courses provided by the Open Learning Fire Science Program. A total of 10 UC colleges now offer distance learning opportunities through programs, certificates or courses.
