WATCH: Fundraising Continues For Student-Organized Relay For Life at UC
Student organizers report that Relay For Life at UC raised more than $125,500 and brought out 1,662 participants for a night on McMicken Commons. The event supported education and research programs under the American Cancer Society.
Megan Kelley, a UC Relay For Life event chairperson and fourth-year accounting major from Mason, Ohio, says fundraising toward UCs 11th annual Relay will continue
through the events website through Aug. 31.
Organizers ultimately hope to raise $180,000 over the 2012-13 academic year.
Students dodged the heavy April downpours they experienced during Relay For Life 2012 on campus, but Kelley says overnight temperatures did dip into the 20s for the early April overnight event. Tangeman University Center remained open during the overnight hours for participants to warm up.
I cant say enough how impressed I am with the UC community and our ability to come together for a great cause, said Fran Larkin, as the event first got underway. Larkin is program coordinator for UCs Center for Community Engagement and is a staff advisor for the UC student group, Colleges Against Cancer, which organizes Relay For Life at UC. Every year, Relay For Life gets bigger and better and as a result, every year, we get closer to a cure, said Larkin, who is a survivor of lymphoma.
The website reports that top fundraising teams were represented by Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority ($17,681) and a team representing the UC College of Nursing ($4,780).
