Alumni, Students Connect at UC Clermont s Business, Law and Technology Day

More than 70 alumni, students, faculty and staff gathered at UC Clermont College on Oct. 4 to network and share experiences as part of the college’s annual Business, Law and Technology Day.

After a welcome and introduction by Professor Karen Lankisch, chair of the college’s Business, Law and Technology Department, two different panels of alumni discussed how they achieved their career success. For many, it started with the personalized support they received while students at UC Clermont.

“I had a great group of professors, and I consider all of them mentors,” said paralegal graduate and panelist Sara Sant Hosler ’16, legal assistant at Robins Kelly Patterson & Tucker LPA. Sant Hosler was a nontraditional student and says making critical career connections started on campus. “Being involved is a great way to build a network.”

For panelist Kasey Arnett ’17, who earned her bachelor’s degree in applied administration at UC Clermont and is currently marketing and communications director for The Crossing church in Batavia, the college provided an accessible gateway to her future.

“I didn’t feel comfortable on the Uptown Campus, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I found a marketing professor at Clermont who was the right person to show me the right things that interested me,” Arnett said. “And later, the professors at Clermont helped me realize that I could also get my bachelor’s degree right here through the BTAS program.”

The panelists advised current students on how to balance their busy schedules of work, classes and family obligations by keeping in mind their main priorities. “Remember that you’re preparing for the long term — your career,” said Lisa Leffner, ’10, a paralegal graduate and now legal manager in global litigation and dispute resolution for Procter & Gamble. Leffner also stressed the importance of a positive attitude in today’s competitive work environment. “Every business now focuses on doing more with less,” she said. “Be a team player, and do whatever needs to be done.”

Assistant Professor Prince Ellis, who helped organize the event and moderated a panel, said networking and learning opportunities are mutually beneficial for alumni, current students and the college as a whole.

“Connecting UC Clermont alumni with current students gives them hope and encouragement,” said Ellis. “UC Clermont also benefits because engaged alumni are more likely to come back and share their experiences and skills with students — and eventually give back to the college in other ways, too.”
