Parosmia is a post-COVID-19 condition that can make once-pleasant foods and scents smell and taste disgusting, in some instances like sewage, garbage or smoke. The condition is being reported in increasing numbers. HuffPost published a story on parosmia, citing the case of a 20-year-old woman who has posted several TikTok videos on her experiences with the condition. One of the experts cited in the article is Ahmad Sedaghat, MD, PhD, associate professor and director of the Division of Rhinology, Allergy and Anterior Skull Base Surgery in the UC College of Medicine.

Determined to make this performance happen, faculty and students adapted to create a virtual performance entitled, “Wake Up,” in which newcomers were featured monologues and performances shot in various locations across Cincinnati.

UC research funding grows in FY 2021

University of Cincinnati researchers collected more external research funding in Fiscal Year 2021 —$221 million — than the $207 million in FY 2020. Top federal sponsors in FY 2021 included the U.S. Department of Education, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Science Foundation. Local and state supporters include the Harold C. Schott Foundation, Talbert House, the Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Youth Services and others.

UC receives grant for water quality research

The University of Cincinnati has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Duke Energy to buy and install a system to monitor water quality in the Great Miami River, an area that affects the drinking water of 2.5 million residents.  The grant, which was awarded in early October, has provided the remaining financial support needed after grants from the Miami Conservancy District, University of Cincinnati Dept. Of Geology, and a matched $25,000 grant from the UC Office of Research. Targeted Compound Monitoring is the company which will provide the needed equipment.
