UC appoints interim dean to head College of Arts and Sciences

Professor of Physics Margaret Hanson has been appointed interim dean of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts and Sciences. Hanson’s appointment follows the move of former Dean Valerio Ferme to UC’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and took effect August 1. She will hold the post until August, 2023. Hanson’s role as Divisional Dean of Natural Sciences will be filled by Professor Emeritus of Geology Arnold Miller until a permanent appointment is made. Hanson plans to build on the college’s successes during Ferme’s term as dean, including: a record $21+ million in research funding; national and international recognition for faculty; increasing graduation rates; and strides forward in equity with the appointment of Associate Professor of Sociology, Littisha Bates as Associate Dean of Inclusive Excellence and Community Partnerships for A&S. The leadership change takes place as the college—with the rest of the university—emerges from an unprecedented academic year, when the school was forced by the pandemic to pivot rapidly to a remote learning model. The college continues to face challenges posed by COVID-19 and its Delta variant.

Students create virtual walking tour of UC's Black history

Step back into UC’s history with the help of a new tour created by students. This Black History Walking Tour guides participants through numerous where one can learn more about prominent figures of Black History like Ralph Belsinger, Marian Spencer and The Quadres Society, as well as locations and events throughout history.      The self-guided tour titled, University of Cincinnati’s Black History Walking Tour, was created by a group of UC students as a way to inform others about important people, events, and locations of Black history around campus, covering with information from the 1800s to modern day.       It is available now through free app, PocketSights. Although the tour has a website, it is designed to be followed as a self-guided tour through mobile device and can be downloaded in the App Store or on Google Play.

The following areas launched their sites on Thurs., Aug. 12th as a part of a semester-long build process geared toward making their initial site a valuable university resource for workplace communications and resources.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Melissa Godoy joins CCM’s staff

UC College Conservatory of Music Dean Stanley E. Romanstein has announced the addition of Melissa Godoy to the college’s roster of distinguished performing and media arts staff members. An award-winning documentary filmmaker, director, cinematographer and editor, Godoy will lead CCM’s Digital initiatives that are focused on video production as the college’s Managing Producer.

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine have developed a computerized decision analytic model to compare projected outcomes of three vaccine strategies: a patient opts for a messenger RNA vaccine, a patient decides to get an adenovirus vector vaccine or the patient simply forgoes a vaccine altogether.

UC has contracted with Follett Higher Education Group (Follett) to operate campus stores since 2005. After an extensive RFP process initiated in the 2020-21 academic year, Follett was awarded a new contract, effective July 1, 2021.
