Get Details on the Big Move Back to Campus
Classes for the University of Cincinnatis autumn quarter get underway on Wednesday, Sept. 24, but the big move back into campus housing takes place Sept. 18-19. Hundreds of volunteers from the Hall Opening Team (students who move in early to help others with the move) to faculty and staff volunteers with the Helping Hands program will be on hand to assist with moving carts and providing information around the residence halls.
UCs Housing & Food Services reports that UCs fall housing demand is over 3,200 students. Todd Duncan, director of UC Housing and Food Services, says study lounges have been converted to temporary rooms to accommodate approximately 100 students. Move-in begins on Thursday, Sept. 18, with peak times for the crowds expected between 10 a.m. and noon.

Duncan says more than 300 faculty, staff and administrators are assisting the move-in through the eighth-annual Helping Hands program. In addition to greeting students, pushing moving carts and providing directions, Helping Hands will offer drinks of cold water to those doing the heavy lifting.
Dawn Wilson, director of UC Resident Education & Development, adds that the Hall Opening Team (HOT) remains popular among students living in the residence halls. HOT volunteers get to move in early, provided they volunteer for the big two-day move-in. Wilson says 300 HOT students will be on hand to help with the move, a tradition at UC for 16 years.
This fall marks the second year that student volunteers will be reminding those moving in to think green. These students, wearing T-shirts that read, Move-In Recyling Volunteer, will be on hand at all of the residence halls to collect discarded cardboard boxes for recycling. Recent UC graduate Shaun Finley, now a graduate student in planning and recycling and energy sustainability coordinator for Central Utilities, says the pilot project at two residence halls last fall reduced the waste stream from those buildings by 96 percent. The cardboard box recycling program will be in place at all residence halls during the move-in this fall.
UCs residential restaurants join a national trend to go greener as MarketPointe at Siddall and CenterCourt eliminate trays from the dining centers this fall. UC first tested the initiative in April for one week as part of the Earth Day celebrations. The trayless trend also conserves on food waste as well as water and detergents.
Across the street at the UC-affiliated Stratford Heights Community on Clifton Avenue, UCs Partner for Achieving School Success (PASS) initiative in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, is introducing a 26-bed, Gen-1 theme house for first-generation college students eligible for need-based Pell grant funding. Students who are the first in their families to go to college are also among students who are at the highest risk of dropping out. The Gen-1 theme house is designed to provide support programs and services to help students make a successful transition from high school to college.
Also new at Stratford Heights, a 26-bed community for unmarried international students offers single and double rooms along with a shared study lounge, TV lounge, laundry facility and gourmet kitchen. The new community is one option offered to international graduate students, in addition to an online database offering housing options in the Uptown, as residents of Morgens and Scioto residence halls were notified in March that those buildings would be closing to prepare for renovations to meet UCs safety standards.
The Stratford Heights Community is also introducing a new living-and-learning community for UCs communication students in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences (A&S). Organizers hope the new living setup will give communication students a sense of unity and good times.

Using environmental DNA analysis, researchers identified a collection of plants used in ceremonial rituals in the ancient Maya city of Yaxnohcah. The plants, known for their religious associations and medicinal properties, were discovered beneath a plaza floor upon which a ballcourt was built, suggesting the building might have been blessed or consecrated during construction.
