UC to honor veterans at Nov. 9 ceremony
The community is invited to attend the University of Cincinnati’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony saluting the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, on McMicken Commons.
Area veterans and distinguished guests will join the University of Cincinnati community at a special ceremony in observance of Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 9.
The formal Veterans Day Ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the atrium of Tangeman University Center, located on the third floor inside the main entrance to the building.
The tribute includes a musical performance by the UC Bearcat Band, presentation of colors by the ROTC Color Guard and remarks by veterans Chris Cravens and Jercell Recipio.
Cravens keynotes this year’s ceremony. A former NCIS federal investigator and infantry Marine, Cravens now serves as chief innovation officer of LZ Cincinnati and chief operations officer of DC Consulting. During his eight years of active duty with the Marines (2004-2012), Cravens served three tours supporting counterinsurgency operations in Fallujah and Ramadi, Iraq, and Sangin Valley, Afghanistan. Cravens has served as a peer mentor with the Hamilton County Veterans Treatment Court, project manager for the 2015 All-Star Game Veteran in Processing Center, and board member with the Whole in My Heart Military Family Support Group, the Cincinnati Education and Research for Veterans Foundation at the Cincinnati VA and the Tristate Veterans Community Alliance.
Recipio is this year’s student veteran speaker. He serves in the Army Reserves’ 706th Transportation Company. A native of Mason, Ohio, Recipio is studying biology and pre-med at UC Blue Ash with the goal of becoming a military physician.
The American Legion Post 530 Honor Guard will conclude the ceremony with three volleys of rifle fire, and buglers stationed in Tangeman University Center will play “Taps.”
Veterans in attendance will be presented with a commemorative gift following the ceremony.
UC's ceremony will be held in advance of the national Veterans Day observance on Sunday, Nov. 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The event is free and open to the community.

UC students organize free health clinic in community

The University of Cincinnati student chapter of Remote Area Medical held its annual free health clinic July 11-12 at St. Xavier High School. Medical, dental and vision care was offered to adults and children, with no income requirements or insurance needed.
