UC Answers: Why should I transfer to UC?

A 2018 graduate shares her experience as a transfer student into University of Cincinnati

Sam Green is a 2018 graduate from UC's journalism program. Today she's a digital content specialist who loves her career path, but it was her transfer from Ohio University to the University of Cincinnati that set her on this course.

Q1: What prompted you to transfer to UC?

A: I transferred to UC because Ohio University wasn’t the right fit for me. I felt lost in a sea of other students in my program (Scripps) and I simply wasn’t happy there. Moving back home and figuring out a new plan for my future in Cincinnati felt like the right move for me at the time.

Q2: What would you say to students who might be anxious about making such a big switch?

The advice I would give to a student considering making such a big change would be to talk to an advisor ASAP and ask a lot of questions. Think through your decision with care and weigh out your pros and cons. Ultimately getting an education anywhere is always a good choice, but making sure the school is a good fit for you matters as well.

Q3: Which UC program did you transfer into?

Journalism in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Q4: How was that experience?

I loved it! I really enjoyed being in classes with a smaller group of students instead of a hundred. I found it easier to share my ideas and feel more connected to my program. I can’t thank Jenny Wohlfarth enough for her guidance during my transition to UC.

Q5: Did the university do anything specific that made your transition successful?

My transfer advisor and program director really made my transfer to UC painless. My advisor explained how my credits earned at OU would apply at UC and helped me carve a path to graduating on time (which was my biggest concern). I was also able to explore other majors and sit in on classes to decide what I was truly interested in. Those exploratory credits actually led me to earning my minor in professional selling.

Q6: Anything you might do differently in the process?

I wish I would have gotten a bit more involved and tried out different clubs or groups around campus right away. It probably would have helped me acclimate a bit faster.

Q7: Any other advice you might share with a student considering transferring into UC?

Don’t hesitate to do what's best for you and your future. UC is such an amazing school that offers so many different experiences and chances to meet others from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Immerse yourself in college life, and you won’t regret a thing. I’m proud to be an alum.
