The Marvin F. Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund established in Allied Health Sciences

A new scholarship fund for Medical Laboratory Science students

In this critical time in our nation’s history, medical lab scientists are playing a critical role in keeping our communities safe. One UC alumnus is being honored for his work in the profession through the establishment of new scholarship in the College of Allied Health Sciences’ Medical Lab Sciences program.

Marvin Kelly retired from the  US Navy where he served as Chief Hospital Corpsman from 1942-62. He was hired by Holmes Hospital on the merits of his Navy rank. Marvin was determined to finish his degree so he enrolled in UC’s Evening College while continuing to work full time to support his wife and four children.  He was determined to finish in four years taking 18 hours some quarters. In 1973, he graduated from UC with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. When Cincinnati General and Holmes combined, he worked at University Hospital in Phlebotomy. His expertise was highly respected.

 A very active person, he continued to astound everyone with his wit, knowledge, smile and a very adventurous life, including: past member of a dune buggy club, golf league and church choir. Marvin also loved to ski in Colorado, riding equestrian with his thoroughbred, Obie, and driving his sports car. As a self-taught flautist, he joined the New Horizons Band.

Marvin passed away at the age of 93 on November 10, 2012 at Wright Patterson military hospital. In spring 2020, his daughter, Koben Kelly Hinman, wanted to celebrate his legacy by supporting students who are following his footsteps into medical lab sciences. Koben’s 4-year gift will support MLS students. 

The purpose of this gift is to establish The Marvin F. Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund. These funds, and all future additions to the Fund, which will be administered by the Foundation in accordance with their policies for gift funds, will be used for scholarships in the College with the following stipulations:

Provide support for a student in the Medical Laboratory Science Program at the College of Allied Health Sciences

  • Preference shall be given to a student with a military background.
  • Recipient shall be a junior or senior (completed 30 (thirty) or more hours in required coursework of the program)

  • Recipient shall have a GPA of 2.8 or higher

  • $1,250 shall be awarded each year for four years, split between fall and spring semesters.

  • Within their application, the students shall answer the question: “What is the importance of a Medical Lab Scientist serving hospital patients?”

Dad was an inspiration to all of us kids. We admired his determination and resolve. He was a kind and dear man, dedicated to his family, and life, with a twinkle in his eyes. After graduating from UC, he ordered and wore his class ring– he was proud to be a Bearcat. Dad would have been 100 years old on October 16, 2019. It seemed so right to honor him.
