Yolanda Vázquez named a visiting fellow at EUI Migration Policy Centre

Yolanda Vázquez, Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, has been named a Visiting Fellow at the Migration Policy Centre at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy.  The fellowship began in January 2022 and she will hold the position through mid-August 2022.

In the role of Visiting Fellow, Vázquez will research the migration laws and policies developed by the European Union (EU) and Italy to stop the flow of irregular migration from Africa.  Specifically, she will focus on the ways in which the EU and Italy have turned to neighboring countries in North Africa to enforce its migration laws and analyze the impact of that decision.  Her research at EUI will inform her study of the U.S./Mexico relationship, exploring the role that race and racism may have contributed to immigration laws and policies.

“The chance to spend time conducting research at the Migration Policy Centre with interdisciplinary researchers from around the globe is incredible.  I’m grateful to have this opportunity to work with scholars dedicated to exploring complex questions around global migration, fostering policy dialogues, and contributing to migration policy debates in Europe and beyond,” said Professor Vázquez. “I look forward to engaging in my research and learning from the wealth of knowledge that is available and is produced at the MPC.”

What is the Migration Policy Center and the EUI

The Migration Policy Centre, part of the Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, conducts advanced research on the transnational governance of international migration, asylum, and mobility. It provides new ideas, rigorous evidence, and critical thinking to inform major European and global policy debates.

The Robert Schuman Centre, “which takes its name from one of the founding fathers of the European Communities, is an inter-disciplinary research center at the heart of the EUI. Established in 1992 to complement the four EUI disciplinary departments, the Schuman Centre’s mission is to be involved in both basic and policy research, collaborate with other centers of excellence in Europe and globally, provide opportunities for young scholars, and promote dialogue with the world of practice.” The EUI describes itself as "the leading institute in Europe dedicated to social sciences and humanities. Founded in 1972 by the six original members of the then European Communities, the EUI has earned a reputation as a transnational hub of research and higher learning.”

“Professor Vázquez regularly engages in cutting edge, impactful research,” said College of Law Dean Verna L. Williams. “Working with the Schuman Centre and EUI will enhance her work and increase its influence on migration policies here and abroad.”
