NEWSNATION: Air Force says it successfully tested hypersonic weapon

U.S. development of hypersonic weapons needed to compete with adversaries

U.S. military forces says that they have completed a successful test of a hypersonic weapon, which flew at five times the speed of sound.

“It’s ahead of the pack in terms of the wide range of technologies being developed in the hypersonic program,” said Dinshaw Mistry, a UC associate professor of public and international affairs told NEWSNATION in news coverage of the test launch.

“It’s slightly behind Russia in actually fielding,” the missiles, which Russia has used in the war against Ukraine, Mistry said, but that it did not really matter in terms of battlefield effectiveness because the technology is now proven to work.

The speed and maneuverability of hypersonic weapons make them difficult to track and intercept.
