Understanding the UC hiring process

Have you identified a job at the University of Cincinnati that sounds like a great fit for your next role? Let’s review what you can expect in the recruiting process, from application to onboarding.

Phase 1: Get ready to apply

Preparation is key to having an application that gets attention from a hiring coordinator or search committee. Here are some tips on getting ready:

  • Proofread your resume for accuracy, spelling and grammar.
  • Use your cover letter to explain why you want this specific job and why you think you are qualified.
  • At UC, creating and sustaining an inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff is one of our highest priorities. As a part of your application, you will be required to submit a diversity statement, sharing how you are prepared to work in an environment with people from cultures and backgrounds different than your own.

Phase 2: Complete the application

  • Your resume and application will be reviewed by our hiring teams to determine any appropriate next steps in the hiring process.
  • If you are not selected to move forward to the interview process, you will receive an email from us with that information.

Phase 3: Interviews

  • The first round of interviews for most positions begins with a virtual interview. There are some good resources for preparing for this meeting.
  • Subsequent interviews may include visiting the University for in-person conversations with a search committee and/or various other members of our UC community.

Tip: If you’re provided names of your interviewees in advance, take a few moments to look them up on the UC website and become familiar with their roles and responsibilities.

Phase 4: The offer and background check

  • Typically, most roles will start with a verbal offer, followed by a written offer letter.
  • Once you have accepted the offer, you will be asked to complete a background check.

Phase 5: Prepare to begin your Bearcats journey

  • Once you have successfully completed the background check, we will agree upon a mutually acceptable start date. Prior to your first day, you will be asked to complete some additional onboarding documentation.
  • New Employee Orientation generally occurs during the first week of work. You will attend an important meeting to learn more and sign up for all the benefits that come with being a UC employee.
