Business Courier: UC and affiliates received nearly $700M in research awards

UC saw record research grants in fiscal year 2023

The Cincinnati Business Courier highlighted a banner year for research grants at the University of Cincinnati and its research partners.

UC and its affiliate institutions received a record $699 million in 2023, a 14% increase over the previous year. UC's research partners include Cincinnati Children’s, UC Health, the Cincinnati VA and the University of Cincinnati Research Institute.

“Our continued research growth helps secure our place among the premiere institutions in the nation,” UC President Neville Pinto said.

UC alone received $314 million, nearly double the awards UC received in 2018.

UC's biggest research supporters include:

  • Department of Health and Human Services, $119 million.
  • Department of Defense, $18 million.
  • Department of Education, $15 million.
  • National Science Foundation, $14 million.
  • State of Ohio funding, $9 million.

UC is a Research-1 university as determined by the Carnegie Commission. UC's Research2030 initiative aims to boost innovation and impact both locally and globally. To that end, UC opened the 1819 Innovation Hub and Digital Futures building dedicated to interdisciplinary research in the Cincinnati Innovation District.

The impact of the Connie and Ray Brooks Scholarship Fund, originally established in 2018 with a five-figure donation, will be far-reaching for UC students and the engineering industry.
