University launches UC Futures: Rural & Small-Town Scholars Summer Program
Free initiative helps introduce students in small towns to urban campus environment
The University of Cincinnati has launched a new program to help introduce students in rural communities to the urban campus environment and support their next steps into higher education.
UC Futures: Rural & Small-Town Scholars Summer Program is being held June 23-25 on UC’s Uptown campus. It is free to the first 80 high school sophomore or junior students who register and helps students from small towns explore academic and career opportunities offered in Cincinnati.
“Through this program, we are reaffirming our commitment to ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the resources and support to pursue higher education,” said Nick Rejebian, assistant director of strategic initiatives at the University of Cincinnati. “This program will provide rural students with the tools and confidence to take their next steps toward college and career success.”
The program consists of a three-day, on-campus, residential experience that allows students to participate in learning sessions focused on exploring majors and careers, networking and participating in group activities with a UC student leader and attending a Cincinnati Reds baseball game.
“By connecting participants with university staff, admissions professionals and current UC students, the program helps scholars envision their future in higher education and beyond,” Rejebian adds.
To be eligible for the program, students must attend a high school designated as "rural" or "small-town" by the National Center for Education Statistics or reside in an Appalachian county, as determined by the Appalachian Regional Commission. UC will also provide up to a $100 travel stipend to cover travel expenses to and from campus.
The deadline for registration is May 11 (11:59 p.m., ET).
