Why your grad school app timeline matters

Grad school applications involve more than just filling out a form. Between exams, recommendation letters and personal statements, there are many moving parts. Starting early helps you meet graduate school application deadlines, avoid stress and submit your strongest possible application.

At UC, graduate school application deadlines vary by program. Some programs admit students every term, while others admit students only once per year. To find out when your specific application is due, reach out to the admission contact for your program of interest.

12+ months before your deadline: Start researching

9–10 months before: Prepare for exams and requirements

  • Create a grad school application checklist.

  • Register for entrance exams like the GRE (if required by your program). UC does not require the GRE for many programs — but confirm with your specific department.

  • Start preparing your personal statement and list of recommenders.

6–8 months before: Draft and request materials

  • Take your GRE (if needed) early in this window to allow for a retake.

  • Request letters of recommendation from faculty or professionals who know your work.

  • Begin writing and revising grad school essays; pay attention to essay deadlines.

3–5 months before: Finalize applications

  • Review each program’s grad school admissions timeline.

    • Please note that UC admits by entry term (semester), so ensure that you are applying to the proper entry term. Not all programs are available to start every entry term. Please reference your program's admissions website for more information.

  • Order transcripts through the UC Registrar or from your previous institution(s).

  • Tailor your materials to highlight your fit with each program.
