Designing a dream
A mother’s mission in manufacturing engineering at UC Clermont
Dorca Torres Figueroa’s journey into manufacturing engineering began with a spark in high school.
“I took a computer-aided drafting class and loved it,” she recalled.
That early interest, combined with encouragement from a cousin who is an engineer, led Torres Figueroa to explore associate degree programs that could serve as a stepping stone for further education. Originally from Puerto Rico, Torres Figueroa moved to Wisconsin at age 14 and later relocated to Cincinnati to be closer to her sister. Now 30, she was determined to build a better future for herself and her family.
That’s when she discovered UC Clermont’s Manufacturing Engineering Technology program.
Torres Figueroa enrolled in fall 2023 and graduated in May with her associate degree. Balancing school, work and family was no small feat. She is a mother of two young children (ages four and two), married and worked full time in retail — all while attending school. “It hasn’t been easy,” she said. “But I’m doing this for my kids.”
Support from her husband and parents has been essential, but she also credits the MET instructors for helping her succeed. “They really try to know their students,” Torres Figueroa said. “They know I’m a mom and that I work full time. They’re flexible — if I need to meet, they make it work, whether it’s virtual or in-person.”
The program’s hybrid format also helped her manage her schedule. “Classes would meet once a week, then we have homework and assignments online,” she said. “Some classes are in the evening, so I work in the morning. It’s a balance, but it works.”
Torres Figueroa particularly enjoyed the hands-on learning. “Principles of Machines was great because we got to see how machines work up close,” she said. “In CAM, we used machines to set up tool paths and produce parts on CNC machines. That was amazing.”
She also appreciated the small class sizes and the one-on-one support from instructors. “It’s easier to interact in the hands-on classes,” Torres Figueroa said. “And the instructors take their time to help you if you need it.”
This summer, Torres Figueroa is interning with Milacron, a global leader in plastic manufacturing based in Batavia, Ohio, near the UC Clermont campus. What continues to drive her to succeed for herself and her children is her love for design.
“I love starting with an idea and creating something out of nothing,” she said. “You work little by little, and then you get to see the final product. It’s so satisfying.”
