UC hosts CPS All-Star Showcase
Event lets high school athletes show off skills on campus, proceeds support homelessness project
Talented high school student athletes will get a chance to show off their basketball skills on the University of Cincinnati court — and help tackle homelessness at the same time.
UC is partnering with Cincinnati Public Schools to host the fifth annual CPS All-Star Showcase event set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in UC’s Fifth Third Arena.
The event allows CPS top athletes to compete in a three-point contest, slam dunk contest, skills challenges and All-Star game. Tickets are now on sale for $10 on the CPS website and all proceeds go to support the CPS program Project Connect.
Project Connect’s mission is to identify and remove educational barriers for CPS students and families experiencing homelessness. For every ticket purchased the ticketholder can enter the name of a CPS student into a raffle for two exciting wins: a cash prize of $1,000 or a $500 shopping spree at an award-winning Cincinnati-based clothing and lifestyle brand called BlaCk OWned OuterWear with Means Cameron.

“This event also underscores UC’s commitment to the district through our CPS Strong Partnership,” explains Lori Wright, EdD, director of CPS Strong at the University of Cincinnati.
“CPS Strong is our universitywide strategic partnership that focuses on recruitment, retention and graduation for CPS graduates attending the University of Cincinnati,” says Wright. “It is our firm belief that our city is only as strong as our public schools. This visible and fruitful partnership has allowed us to create opportunities that support college readiness, access and student success."
“Many of our high school athletes and visitors are visiting the University of Cincinnati for the first time when they attend the showcase, so it’s the perfect opportunity for us to roll out the red-carpet welcome for future Bearcats and family members,” says Wright.
The event has raised more than $60,000 during the past four years. Several community organizations are helping to sponsor this year’s CPS All-Stars, including the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, which is among the contest sponsors.
David Kelley, PhD, sports administration professor, says students in his program have played an important behind-the-scenes role in making the showcase successful each year. He says their contribution is experiential learning at its best. About 40 UC students in sports administration help support the event.
“They’re not just interning or volunteering; they’re driving ticket operations, securing sponsorships, providing hospitality, executing event operations and managing every transition throughout the event’s timeline,” explains Kelley. “Their professionalism elevates this showcase from a basketball event to a truly community‑changing experience.”
