MakerLab to launch at UC Clermont this fall
Innovative space for students is funded by federal grant and college
The University of Cincinnati Clermont will launch a new MakerLab near the Frederick A. Marcotte Library this fall, giving students an experimental, hands-on space to turn creative ideas into reality and explore new ways of learning through making.
The Makerlab is funded in part thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, awarded by the State Library of Ohio, with additional funding from UC Clermont — bringing the total investment to nearly $60,000.
Designed to support creativity, innovation and teaching across disciplines, the MakerLab will feature equipment for button making, direct-to-film printing, heat presses, sewing and crafting, along with audio and visual tools. The space is expected to open this fall and will be available to students, faculty and staff during designated, staffed hours each day.
“The Marcotte Library MakerLab will give students an experimental space to bring their creative ideas to life,” said Catie Carlson, PhD, library director at UC Clermont.
In addition to supporting student creativity, the MakerLab will provide opportunities for faculty to incorporate new teaching models into the curriculum, encouraging experiential learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Plans for the MakerLab reflect a long-standing goal to expand hands-on, applied learning opportunities on the UC Clermont campus and to position the library as a hub for creativity, exploration and innovation.
