Plans for a new Welcome Gateway Building at UC move forward

Request for qualifications document filed with the state of Ohio

The Cincinnati Business Courier reports that a criteria architect/engineer for a design build proposal is being sought for a new 200,000-square-foot Welcome Gateway Building for the University of Cincinnati.

The structure will sit atop a 400-space underground parking garage at the corner of Calhoun Street and Clifton Avenue. This is the former location of the UC College of Law and is currently greenspace on Uptown campus.

A Request for Qualifications Design-Build Contract document has been filed with the state of Ohio. It explains the Welcome Gateway Building will serve as the primary point of entry for prospective students and their families. The structure will be a “public-facing showcase of UC’s academic, creative and technological identity,” according to the document.

The project’s total cost is estimated to total $200 million, while construction costs are slated for $160 million, according to the document.

The Cincinnati Business Courier reports the Welcome Gateway Building will serve as a hub for prospective students and their families, with a bookstore, cafe, 1,200-seat auditorium, rehearsal and practice spaces, art galleries, classrooms and a variety of public engagement areas.

A tentative schedule indicates a design-build contractor should be selected by June 30.

Design-Build services for the project should be completed by December 2029.
