Defying the demographic cliff

UC, other area universities and colleges grow enrollment

The Cincinnati Business Courier reported that six of Greater Cincinnati’s largest universities, including the University of Cincinnati, saw strong enrollment growth this fall despite national demographic headwinds.

This comes as the nation faces a dwindling pool of college-aged Americans and in higher education circles known as the feared “demographic cliff.” The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education predicts the number of 18-year-olds who graduate from high school each year will drop by 13% by 2041, reports the Business Courier.

The University of Cincinnati recorded its largest enrollment ever, with the official fall 2026 headcount reaching 54,437 students. The figure represents a 1.4% increase over last year’s enrollment, or 755 additional students.

The Cincinnati Business Courier reported that UC leadership attributed growth to a 10.6% increase in the first-year student class across all its campuses and demand in specific programs, such as its law school, which posted its largest enrollment in a decade, and increases in music and nursing programs.

The Bearcats Affordability Grant, which started this fall, offers free tuition for qualifying Ohio students whose families earn less than $75,000 per year and is also credited with helping to boost UC enrollment.

The Cincinnati Business Courier reported that nationwide, undergraduate college enrollment peaked at 18.1 million in 2010 and decreased steadily in the decade that followed, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics. After reaching an all-time low of 15.4 million undergraduate students during the pandemic in 2021, the numbers have slightly improved.

Last fall, U.S. undergraduate enrollment recovered to about 16.2 million, with total postsecondary enrollment at 19.4 million. But not every institution experienced those trends the same way, reports the Cincinnati Business Courier. Enrollment at four-year public colleges increased in the decade after 2010, while numbers remained largely flat at four-year private nonprofits over the same period.
