A Bearcats for Life Story
For Almaamar Alkiyumi, being a Bearcat for Life is not just a phrase, but a responsibility shaped by gratitude, growth and purpose.
Raised in Oman in a family that emphasized academic excellence and responsibility, I learned that education is a tool for service and long-term impact. Guided by this belief, I approached the decision to study abroad thoughtfully, seeking a university that would equip me with both knowledge and practical experience to make a meaningful difference —even if it meant leaving family and home behind.
I carefully compared universities across several countries, balancing affordability and long-term career opportunities. Earning a full government scholarship awarded to only 1% of more than 35,000 applicants affirmed my academic potential and opened the door to studying at a top U.S. institution. I chose my path with intention, drawn to an academic program that combined rigorous coursework with real-world experience through one of the strongest cooperative education programs in the United States. Although the scholarship opened doors, stepping into a new country and education system brought its own set of challenges.
Moving from theory-based learning to hands-on, project-driven coursework challenged me to think differently and grow faster. Navigating cultural differences, classroom norms and independence taught me accountability, confidence and self-discipline. Over time, these challenges became defining moments of transformation, shaping both my approach to learning and my ability to lead.
Do you have a Bearcats for Life story?
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and later a Master of Business Administration, building both my technical expertise and leadership abilities. As president of the Omani Student Association, I discovered my purpose in service, fostering community, supporting fellow international students, and proudly representing my culture.
Through these experiences, I cultivated the values and connections that define my Bearcat identity today.
UC gave me more than an education. It gave me the confidence to lead, the courage to grow, and a community I will always consider home.
I remain committed to giving back, mentoring future students, and staying connected as an engaged alum. The lessons, relationships, and values I gained will continue to guide me forward, and I will always feel a call to return, serve and uplift the community that shaped who I have become.
