UC associate professor wins short film award, named Mary Ellen Heintz professor
Writer partners with Ghana filmmaker on 'Home, Or Our Journey is Still Long'
Anima Adjepong won an award for the best short film at the Black Star International Film Festival in Ghana, in September. Adjepong’s film will be screened on Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Esquire Theater.
The film titled "Home, Or Our Journey is Still Long," was made in collaboration with Ghana film maker Joewackle J. Kusi. It was funded by the University Research Council Pivot Grant award. Adjepong said the film is about exploring the feeling of home and belonging, as well as reflecting on the ocean and the industrialization of the natural world.

“It’s a beautiful film, aesthetically, and it is quite warming to reflect on what home means to people, beyond your own kind of experience,” said Adjepong.
At the original screening in Ghana, Adjepong said he felt like the film opened people's perspectives and views on friendship, togetherness, and same gender intimacy.
“The conversations it has evoked have been rich," Adjepong said. "People are getting things from the film and asking questions that I would not have anticipated when we created it.”
The screening 5:30 p.m. Nov. 12 is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. Unoma Azuah, a poet and activist will be speaking after the screening in addition to Hilary Tackie, a professor from SUNY Paltz. Adjepong said they will host a Q&A session after as well.
In addition to being a poet and film maker, Adjepong was also named the Mary Ellen Heintz professor for UC's Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. They said it was an honor to have the title.
“I’m very happy to be the Heintz professor,“ Adjepong said. “It allows me to expand my own mentorship capacity but then the post doc position I’m adding will help support the department.”
Adjepong also created Silent Majority Ghana, a transnational group that sheds light on homophobic laws in Ghana and elsewhere.
