Five Alumnae to Receive Honors

The Friends of Women's Studies will honor five UC alumnae during Women's Studies Presents on Saturday, April 13.

Sponsored by Friends and the UC Alumni Association, this event dates back to 1982 and recognizes women graduates who have made a significant contribution to society through their careers and community service. This year's award recipients are:

* Jennifer Eberhardt, who received her BA in psychology at UC with the support of a minority scholarship and her PhD from Harvard. She currently teaches at Stanford and does research on the effects of racial stereotyping.

* Cecelia Johnson, now a retired educator who received both her BA and MA in secondary education and psychology at UC. She has been a trailblazer at a time when it was difficult for an African American to pursue higher education.

* Jeanne M. Lusher, who earned her BS and MD at UC and is one of the nation's experts in the study and treatment of childhood hemophilia. She is a Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Wayne State University.

* Gloria F, Pinney, who received her PhD through UC's classics department and is now on the faculty of Harvard. She is an accomplished historian in ancient art, specializing in women in Greek art.

* Charlotte (Tommie) Thompson, graduate of UC's school of community planning (now part of DAAP). She has made an outstanding contribution to the City of Cincinnati and beyond as a senior city planner and a dedicated community leader.

The featured speaker at the awards luncheon will be Sheila Adams, Urban League of Greater Cincinnati president. Participants will also attend workshops. Themes for these sessions include:

* Women and Islam, a video screening and discussion.

* Goddesses, Crones and Wise Women, an interactive exploration of "the women we were and the women we are becoming."

* Readings on Women, War and Peace, presented by faculty from a variety of disciplines.

There will also be a panel discussion at which the honorees share highlights of their academic, career and personal journeys.
