Today's ML King Events: One On, One Off

One of the two programs at the University of Cincinnati to be held on Friday, Jan. 17, to honor Martin Luther King Jr. has been canceled. The evening program will be rescheduled at a later date, according to event organizers.

  • POSTPONED TO A DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED:
    7 p.m. - "The Dream: Continuing the Legacy of the Past and the Promise of the Future"
    The UC African American Cultural and Research Center (AACRC) Choir will open the evening program at the Event Pavilion. The keynote speaker will be Kenneth Durgans, executive director of diversity development in Human Resources at Xavier University. There will also be inspirational readings, including a poem by UC student Ebony Moore. UC's Miss Kuamka 2002, Monet Wade, will perform an interpretive dance. The evening event is sponsored by UC's AACRC, MainStreet and Friday Night Live. Cash parking is available in CBA and Langsam Library garages off Martin Luther King Drive.

  • 11 a.m.-1 p.m. - "Living the Dream"
    The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial March and ceremony will be held at the UC College of Medicine. The memorial march will begin at the Kresge auditorium lobby at 11 a.m. and travel to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial for wreath placement at the corner of Reading Road and MLK Drive. The marchers will return to the Kresge Auditorium for the ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. Sponsors are The Health Alliance, the UC Medical Center and The Baptist Ministers Conference of Greater Cincinnati & Vicinity. Carolyn Thomas, RN, MSN, vice president of patient care services at University Hospital and associate dean for patient care services at the College of Nursing, is mistress of ceremonies. The Rev. Carl DeMeritt and Keith Melvin, MD, UC Family Medicine, will present "Reflections on the Life of Dr. King." Three Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship recipients will be announced, and the Martin Luther King Spirit Award will be bestowed on two members of our community. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Choir will also be featured.
