Biology Department Finishes The Year With A Flourish

There are no stars on the door of the biological science department’s main office, but there probably should be. Members of the department had the unusual distinction of receiving several prestigious awards during spring quarter.

Edna Kaneshiro was named Distinguished Research Professor

. After decades of providing outstanding service, Carl Huether had the honor of receiving the Faculty Award for Exemplary Contributions in Service to the University of Cincinnati. The distinction was especially noteworthy because this is the first year the award has been given. The accomplishments of both Kaneshiro and Huether were acknowledged during graduation ceremonies.

The biological sciences office team also distinguished themselves. Mary Wischer, Charmaine Mitchell, Sandy McGeorge, and Mary Killeen were among two teams and six individuals who were chosen as winners of the 2005 President’s Quality Service Award. Along with Sarah Brown (English), another McMicken recipient, they will be recognized at Celebrate UC, which is scheduled for October 27, 2005.

Departmental students also performed exceptionally well. Anna Fiskin was awarded the Joyce E. Yeager Scholarship at the Awards Dinner and was selected to participate in the

WISE program

, as were several other biology majors. In addition,

Stephanie Peters and Amit Zachariah, both of the college’s outstanding seniors

, were biology majors.
