Vacation Day Donation Announcement

Date: Oct. 7, 2005

To: The University Community

From:  Nancy L. Zimpher

I have just approved a unique way for us to contribute to relief for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  UC will allow employees to donate a day of vacation and the equivalent of your daily salary will go to the Hurricane Katrina and Rita relief fund.  This is a truly unique way of boosting our donations and a way to show your compassion and provide real assistance to those affected by these storms.  Donations of vacation days will be accepted until the total reaches $50,000.  I am most pleased at this innovative means of providing help to our friends, family and loved ones affected by these events.  As of now, our total cash contributions are $20,000 and we have received $5,000 in pledges with a group working to match that $5,000.  We thank you for your generosity and hope this unique way of adding donations will further assist the hurricane survivors.

Your donation of vacation time can be authorized by completing the attached form and submitting it to Deborah Weinstein at ML 0638 by November 1, 2005.  The amount of the University's cash contribution will be the equivalent of your pay for one day.  There will be no actual reduction in your current pay, and no addition to your taxable income based on your donation of a vacation entitlement, but 8 hours will be deducted from your vacation balance.  Please note that unlike making a cash donation directly to a charity, the leave- donation program does not use any of an employee’s taxable earned income. Thus, since an employee will not be taxed on the value of the leave, you cannot take a charitable contribution deduction.

If you have questions, please address them to Deborah Weinstein at 66049 or Deborah.Weinstein@uc.edu.

HURRICANE RELIEF FUND
LEAVE DONATION AUTHORIZATION

I authorize the University of Cincinnati to reduce my accrued unused vacation balance by one day (8 hours).  In exchange for my donation of this vacation entitlement, UC will make a cash contribution to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita through its Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

I understand that forgoing my right to 8 hours of paid vacation will not cause any addition to my taxable income, and that therefore, the value of this charitable contribution will not be available to me as a tax deduction on my 2005 federal income tax return.
