2006 Faculty Awards: Boyce Wins Established Entrepreneur Award
Burn patients and others with chronic skin wounds will benefit from a new medical product developed by Steven Boyce.
Dr. Boyce developed a cultured skin substitute, tradenamed PermaDerm, which allows damaged skin to regenerate with the use of less donated skin, thus reducing the need for skin grafts from other parts of the patients body.
PermaDerm combines a biodegradeable fabric made from collagen with the patients skin cells in a graft that allows skin to regrow. One advantage to his discovery is that it has been used successfully with large burns even patients who suffer burns over as much as 90 percent of their bodies.
Boyce holds six U.S. patents in tissue engineering and recently sold his start-up company, Cutanogen, to Cambrex Corporation. Boyce has served on the UC faculty since 1989.
