Award-Winning Fashion Design Pioneer Stan Herman to Receive Honorary Doctorate from UC

Three-time Coty award-winning designer Stan Herman, past president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), will receive an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts at the University of Cincinnati’s Commencement Ceremony at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 14, at Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. The honorary degree represents the highest award given by the University of Cincinnati.

Herman, a 1950 graduate of UC’s top-ranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), pioneered the designer uniform, with clients including FedEx, McDonalds, Amtrak, Avis, TWA, United Airlines and Jet Blue.

As a pioneer in designer activism, he supported animal rights by being the first to commercialize faux fur and use his first showing of that line to raise funds for the Central Park Zoo.

His leadership of the CFDA led to the launch of the “Fashion Targets Breast Cancer” initiative that raised more than $10 million for research, in addition to other fund-raising efforts that raised more than $12 million to support AIDS research and education. Herman was the founder and original president of 7th on Sixth, New York’s Fashion Week tents in Bryant Park – an event for designers to show their upcoming collections. He received the CFDA’s highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2006.

Herman is celebrating a decade as one of the best-selling designers on the QVC television network.

Herman continues to serve as a mentor to UC design students, returning to UC to lecture, serving as a co-op employer and hosting UC design co-ops in his New York studios.
