Cardiothoracic Radiologist Named Chairwoman of UC's Radiology Department

Cincinnati—Jannette Collins, MD, has been appointed chair of the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine's radiology department.

She replaces Robert Lukin, MD, who retired in February 2008 after 15 years as chair of the department. Collins will be the fourth chair and the first woman to lead UC's radiology department.

Collins' appointment is effective Feb. 1, 2009, pending approval by the UC Board of Trustees. Interim chairperson Mary Gaskill-Shipley, MD, will continue to lead the department through January 2009.

"I am delighted that Dr. Collins' is joining the College of Medicine leadership team," said David Stern, MD, vice president for health affairs at UC and dean of the college. "She will move our radiology department forward to make imaging a central modality in our clinical activities and emerging centers of excellence: cancer, neuroscience, metabolic diseases and women's health."

Collins joins UC from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Radiology where she currently serves as a professor of radiology and medicine. Her clinical practice focuses on advanced cardiothoracic and diagnostic breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound and image-guided biopsy.

During her tenure in Wisconsin, Collins has held numerous leadership roles, including radiology residency program director (1996-2001), associate vice chair of education (1998-1999) and assistant dean of graduate medical education (1999-2001). 

A respected educator and clinician, she also serves in national leadership roles including her current role as president of the Society of Thoracic Radiologists and chair of the American Roentgen Ray Society maintenance of certification committee and Radiological Society of North America education refresher course.

She serves or has served in a primary editor capacity with the American Journal of Radiology, Academic Radiology, Journal of American College of Radiology and Seminars in Roentgenology. She is also a peer reviewer for nine radiology-focused medical journals and serves on the editorial board of Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology.

Collins received her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio where she was ranked first in a class of 120. She completed her diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Wisconsin, and a thoracic imaging fellowship at Yale University. In addition to her clinical training, she completed one-year fellowships in medical education research, radiology journalism and executive leadership in academic medicine.

A clinician-scientist, Collins has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and
more than 75 book chapters, book reviews, editorials and published seminars regarding breast and cardiothoracic imaging as well as educational issues. Her primary research interests include imaging lung transplants, thoracic trauma, small airway disease and cystic fibrosis as well as medical education research.

Collins is certified by the American Board of Radiology. She will continue her clinical practice in cardiopulmonary imaging.
