VIDEO: Greek Week Celebrates a Week of Successful Service

Greek Week 2009 at the University of Cincinnati raised $38,000 to benefit the local Make-A-Wish Foundation – $2,000 over fundraising goals set for Greek Week April 20-25. The news allows the Greeks to grant the wishes of six children in Greater Cincinnati.

The final tally and the top competitors were announced at the Greek Week awards banquet on April 28.

Greek Week President Candice Burnam, a UC health sciences major from Madisonville and a member of Chi Omega Sorority, says the top fundraising organizations for Greek Week 2009 were Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Kappa Kappa Gamma was also the sorority that scored the most points at Greek Week events, and Alpha Tau Omega was the top fraternity in gaining points at competitions.

Hoxworth Blood Center reports that the Greek Week Order of Omega blood drive on April 20 resulted in the collection of 69 units of blood/blood products. Sixty-five people donated and among them were 25 first-time donors. Five of the donors were able to do what’s called a “Double Red Donation,” meaning the donor was able to give twice as much blood in just one donation. Eligible donors have the option of giving a two-unit red cell donation if their blood type is in high demand.

“Hoxworth Blood Center is very fortunate to have the support of the Greek community at the University of Cincinnati,” says Alecia Lipton, associate public information officer for Hoxworth Blood Center. “The recent campus blood drive and altruistic gift of blood donation has the potential of saving 207 lives in the Cincinnati USA region. We applaud the efforts of UC’s Greek community and look forward to working with them again in the near future.”

The video above features a new addition to Greek Week 2009, themed, “The ‘90s – Smells Like Greek Spirit.” Chapters delegated a member who was willing to take a pie in the face to benefit Make-A-Wish. The pie-in-the-face recipients took it all in good stride. In fact, several were wiping off more than just their faces after the event, as shown in the video.

A Greek Week tradition also included the belly-flop contest. One team representing Theta Phi Alpha, featuring Brittany Lewis and Annaliese Hnat, enacted a scene from the movie, “Titanic,” complete with a soundtrack of the theme song. But their rendition ended with a twist, or rather, a splash.
