New York Video Artist Tommy Hartung to Exhibit at DAAP Galleries

New York-based video artist Tommy Hartung will exhibit his work in an exhibit, “TOMMY HARTUNG,” at the University of Cincinnati’s Philip M. Meyers Jr. Memorial Gallery April 4-29, 2011.

Hartung’s work often addresses the common myth making and storytelling figures often found within the intersections of education, history and religion with the goal of probing into issues of dogmatic thought and objectivity regarding the past.

He does so by creating alternate worlds in his studio by means of elaborate, stop-motion animations created using low-tech, innovative lighting techniques and camera settings. His techniques are, by their very nature, explorations of the use of entertainment and cinematic devices to transfer knowledge and story from one generation to the next. By exposing the mechanics behind the moving image, Hartung provides a means to excavate and question accounts of the past, examine how we transcribe the present and casts doubt on commonly held narratives past, present and future.

This exhibition was made possible thanks to support from Lynne Meyers Gordon, UC, the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), DAAP Dean Robert Probst and the DAAP Galleries staff.

Opening reception for the exhibit is 4-7 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2011.

The exhibit is free and open to the public 10 a.m.-5 p.m., weekdays, April 4-29, in the Philip M. Meyers Jr. Memorial Gallery, located in the Joseph A. Steger Student Life Building, Room 465, on the University of Cincinnati campus.
