College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services Adds More Distance-Learning Options for Fall

Beginning this fall, the University of Cincinnati College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) is offering 11 new online learning opportunities for teachers who want to gain expertise in numerous fields of education.

Academic certificate programs can enhance the degrees of graduates and undergraduates as they pursue a particular field of study. Typically, certificates can be completed in 21 academic quarter hours or 15 semester hours.

Lisa Holstrom, CECH assistant dean, says the new, online certificate programs offered by CECH are graduate level, and provide professional development for licensed teachers. The programs offer an additional state credential for teachers, enhancing their career tracks and possibly their salaries.

Here are the online CECH certificate programs that are getting underway this fall:

Autism Spectrum Disorder Graduate Certificate – For teachers, parents and others who want to learn more about Autism and about supporting autistic children and their families.

Behavior Analysis Graduate Certificate – The program provides teachers and school personnel with skills on analyzing the academic and social behavior of a student, as well as how to take action should the teacher need to assist a student who is having problems.

National Board Professional Teaching Standards – National Board Certification promotes better teaching, better learning and better schools. This online coursework is the academic preparation for teachers who desire this additional credential.

Positive School Climate Graduate Certificate – Designed specifically by the Urban Center for Social Justice, Peace Education and Research (UCSJPER), the program is for teachers who want to promote a positive learning environment in their classrooms and in school buildings. Teachers will gain skills on identifying, addressing and preventing bullying, as well as management techniques to build respect in the classroom. (No longer available after 2011-12 academic year).

Reading Graduate Certificate – The program helps teachers build their skills in supporting students at differing stages of literacy development, as well as students from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

STEM Teaching Graduate Certificate – The certificate is designed for current education professionals, k-12 teachers or informal educators seeking professional development in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas, wishing to teach more effectively in the STEM disciplines, or seeking to grow into a new position focused on STEM teaching and learning.

Substance Abuse Prevention Graduate Certificate – For educators, counselors, military service personnel and criminal justice professionals who desire to become substance abuse prevention professionals.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Endorsement Certificate – The TESOL endorsement program responds to the changing ethnic make-up of the classroom. The program provides professional development for pre-k through 12th-grade teachers. It is designed for licensed teachers who want to add the Ohio TESOL endorsement to their current teaching licenses.

Teacher Leader Graduate Certificate – Teacher leaders provide the coaching, mentoring and guidance necessary to launch new teachers on long and successful careers as educators.
