Residence Halls Go Wireless
UC Information Technologies had a busy summer covering every inch of residence halls with wireless Internet access. This endeavor, a partnership between UCIT and Campus Services, included installing 900 Internet access points and took three months to complete.
This project is part of a bigger plan to make the entire campus wireless. A main goal in the UC2019 strategic plan, UCIT plans to expand Secure Wireless to the entire campus by the end of 2012, well ahead of schedule. The plan is to roll out coverage building by building. Those who would like to see the schedule and progress can visit our website at uc.edu/ucit/internet/nowires.
Also, a second project completed this summer increased the capacity of our Internet connection on east, west and UC Reading campuses. Over Labor Day weekend, UCIT upgraded to more robust equipment and we can continuously monitor the bandwidth usage and adjust as necessary.
Being able to provide the tools and infrastructure to support a leading university is our number one priority in UCIT. We are excited to offer a secure, fast connection so students, faculty and staff members alike can make their education mobile to fit their lifestyles, says Michael Lieberman, interim vice president and chief information officer.
If students have trouble connecting to the secure wireless, they can either call the Help Desk at 556-HELP (4357) or bring their computer to our ResNet desk inside the Mobile Cats Wireless store on MainStreet where a free, drop-off service is provided.
