$1 Million Gift Inspires Groundbreaking Program at UC s Lindner College of Business, Goering Center
The University of Cincinnatis Carl H. Lindner College of Business will add a family and private business certificate to its curriculum beginning in Fall 2012. The program is the first of its kind offered by any College of Business nationwide.
The curricular enhancement is made possible by a $1 million endowed professorship from John and Gloria Goering, founders of the Colleges Goering Center for Family and Private Business. An extension of the Goering Center, the new program will allow UC students to benefit from the Centers unique educational offerings in the same way local business professionals have since its establishment in 1979.
Over the years, the Goering Center has provided endless opportunities to strengthen tri-state family businesses, said Lindner College of Business Dean David Szymanski. The next step in the Centers mission of business excellence is to enrich our community outreach by also emphasizing teaching and research. The Goerings continued generosity to the College will allow us to fulfill that mission at the Goering Center.
The new programs curricula will be shaped and led by current College of Business professor Sid Barton. It will likely include four 3-credit-hour semester courses covering all aspects of the management of family and private business. As a certificate program, students are not required to be enrolled at UC to participate in the courses.
Many of our students will bear the pressure of taking over their familys business or even starting up their own after they graduate, said Barton. By adding an academic and research arm to the Goering Center, we can give students a head start in understanding how to tackle the unique challenges of owning and working with private businesses.
Currently, the Goering Center offers its members educational programs and resources aimed at accelerating business growth and sustaining family business harmony. The Centers four official Institutes host programs to help family businesses tackle critical issues such as succession planning, leadership development, long-term strategic planning and conflict resolution. The Centers programs have benefited such local enterprises as Graeters, LaRosas, Rumpke, Hydrotech, Buskens, and Scherzinger Pest Control.
The Goering Center has undoubtedly played a key role in helping build and sustain so many thriving private businesses here in the tri-state, said John Goering. Our business partners are truly a testament to the programs strength and we are proud to have a hand in expanding that strength into the Lindner Colleges curriculum.
