German Studies Conference to Focus on Racial Issues

On the heels of Cincinnati’s annual Oktoberfest comes another German-inspired tradition: the

Department of German Studies’

17th annual Focus on German Studies Graduate Student Conference.

The event hosted by the department’s graduate student journal

Focus on German Studies

will be held Oct. 19 and 20 in the Max Kade Cultural Center in Old Chem. The theme for this year’s conference is “Wanna Race? Construction and Contestations of ‘Race’ in German Cultural History.” Keynote speaker will be internationally renowned scholar Tina Campt of Barnard College, who will present her paper titled “Racing the Family Narrative: Black German Family Photography and the Stories Pictures (Won’t) Tell.”

As part of the event, the department and its graduate students will host graduate scholars from around the world with advanced knowledge in a variety of disciplines, including history, comparative literature, transnational studies and more. Focus on German Studies also will be celebrating in anticipation of publishing its 20th anniversary issue in 2013.

UC alum makes her mark in research, service

In 1960, as a young and eager statistician, Joan Reisch graduated from UC’s College of Arts and Sciences, and pursued a career in Texas at the Southwestern Medical Center where she’s held numerous roles as both faculty and staff. This year, Reisch was recognized for her career accomplishments and contributions with the Philanthropist of the Year Award by UC’s Alumni Association. This award is given to an alumnus who has been highly engaged in philanthropic activities with A&S, or has made a significant impact on the college.
