FOTOFOCUS: 'Exposed: Expectation, Experimentation, Exploration' Featured in Park National Bank Art Gallery

Exposed: Expectation, Experimentation, Exploration a group exhibition of photography will be featured in the Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont College from October 1 – 26 as part of FOTOFOCUS month-long biennial festival of photography celebrated in Cincinnati and the surrounding areas. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 12, 6-8 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

This group exhibition, curated by assistant professor of fine arts, Kim Taylor, and program manager of community arts at UC Clermont College, Nikki Vargas, features local, national and international artists whose imagery and processes represent varying approaches to the photographic medium. While some artists utilize subject matter from a more traditional perspective, others seek alternative methods, bringing experimentation to the image-making process. In unifying such junctures, this exhibition is an exploration of photography's capacity to transcend both physical and creative boundaries. Some of the featured works are from the UC Clermont College campus art collection.

Some of the works depict landscape scenes from close to home and far away. Works by Robert Coomer, Andrea Millette, Brad Phalin and Bill Howes turn the lens on domestic life but in two very different states of existence depicting homey living spaces and neglected homes in states of decrepitude and destruction. Others turn to vistas far from home, as seen in the ethereal panoramic images of Silvio Camerin who draws from antiquity of Ancient Greece and Roy Taylor whose lens captured the Himalayas from the cockpit of a C130.

Photographers such as Kevin Thayer and Stegmaier and Reiamgets look both inward and outward to examine the human condition through self-portraiture and time-lapsed photography. Fazilat Soukhakian connects to her subjects on a personal level in order to document a period in Iran’s history. Matt Dwyer finds beauty in the unexpected, unappealing aspects of life through photographs taken while working in industrial-sized trash compactors, capturing everything from medical waste to meat-packing sludge.

Photography books will also be displayed, selected by reference and instruction librarian at UC Clermont College, Kathleen Epperson, from the campus library.

The Park National Bank Art Gallery is located in the Snyder building on the UC Clermont College campus in Batavia at 4200 Clermont College Drive. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sunday.
